Follows the strange story of Chiaki, a daydreaming otaku who longs to confess her feelings to her childhood friend, Fumiko, and how that's made especially difficult when she gets transported to another world.
So, you may or may not have noticed I recently changed my avatar to a picture of a rat. Or more specifically, myself as a rat. I've talked about this a fair bit on social media, but if you don't follow me there, this might seem odd and out of nowhere for me.
The short version is that a conversation about Chinese Zodiacs led to me referring to myself as an "autistic rat girl." And subsequently led to me getting introspective and way more attached to that title than I expected. Which, naturally, I had to then draw; even when I didn't have a working tablet for a few weeks.
And even now, I keep drawing. I've never really thought of myself as a furry before, and I admit I feel like I'm still kinda working things out, but I sure do feel right depicting myself as a rat at the moment. So take that however you will.
Regardless, I feel connected to this look, so for the foreseeable future, this is probably how I'll draw myself. It doesn't change anything story-wise from me, mind. I don't have any plans for "ratfolk" demi-humans in My Impossible Soulmate, nor for a rat HRT substory, or anything like that (at the moment). It's really just for me. But it is something you'll see and I've already had a few people asking, so I felt like I should address it for the sake of transparency.
Speaking of MIS, new chapter cover next week. New proper pages come the following week. I'm finally back in action. Sorry again for the much longer than anticipated wait! I really meant that to be a much shorter break. ^^;
And if you're curious about the whole sequence of events in my journey to "ratification," you can see it in your social platform of choice (or at least whichever you can tolerate long enough). XD Twitter Bluesky Mastodon
From Merriam-Webster: "Ratify: to approve and sanction formally: Confirm e.g. 'ratify a treaty'"
This is actually incredibly frustrating, because any pun I can think of here is too damn subtle to work, and would just sound like me either approving or questioning your avatar change.
Suffice to say, I find the double meaning very amusing, and hope others do too.
If I could time-travel back to 2010 and find a younger, pre-HRT Jocelyn who's just getting ready to start publishing her little transy webcomic, I wonder how she would react after I tell her that, years from then, she has happily transitioned, beaten cancer, gained a dedicated following and appreciation from the online trans community to the point that people are still recommending her comic to new readers, brought the comic to a successful end and started a new one, and also, just as a fun little side note, she's a rat now.
While it's interesting if the Chinese find kangaroos sufficiently like rats to use the same word (or at least character) for them, the Chinese zodiac is thought to have been established since ca. 500 BC - way before they could have known about kangaroos
I feel like it would be more likely that the ancient Asians simply didn't feel Australia was worth the hazards. From the Wikipedia article on History_of_navigation, "About 1000 BC, Nusantaran Austronesian developed tanja sail and junk sail. The invention of these types of sail made sailing around the western coast of Africa possible, because of their ability to sail against the wind." Elsewhere on the page, it talks about people migrating from Asia into the Polynesian islands and on to Hawaii, but the dates aren't particularly clear. On the page for Tonga, however, it states that Tongan inhabitation started before 1000BC. If people could get from Asia mainland all the way to Tonga, then getting to Australia would be easy.
Why then wouldn't they have trade and durable contact with the people of Australia? Have you seen a list of the animals on Australia and considered how formidable they would be to people with weaponry from 500BC? The attire and cosmetics of the various people indigenous to Australia almost certainly wouldn't have been attractive enough to overcome the threats of Australian wildlife.
That does suggest that real knowledge of kangaroos was probably very slim to the Chinese who made their zodiac. However, for the more affluent and knowledgeable, familiarity with rumors of the strange creatures on that island certainly seems to me to be likely. Dragons have a year in the Chinese zodiac, I don't understand why rats would be more likely to be represented than kangaroos. It feels to me like confusion regarding a relationship between the two may have ensured the rats and kangaroos made it into the final list.
As for how it's translated, I ask, did the person who worked out the original translation to European languages know what a kangaroo was? That seems less likely to me.
ive recently (okay, its been like 5 months) discovered therian/otherkin side I totally get stumbling into liking yourself as an animal and not understanding why, but just rolling with it
rat jocelyn is very cute!
I’m also an autistic guy born under the year of the rat (I think I saw before we’re the same age).
One time I drew a picture for an ex. It was two rats driving a Ferrari through the desert. There were two rats because I’m also a Gemini and a Ferrari because my college roommate once compared me to one.
I'm also a "rat girl". Don't know about "autistic" though; I was never checked for it, and I'm not one of those people who self-diagnose, but it wouldn't surprise me if I were somewhere on the spectrum.
autistic Chinese zodiac rat checking in. (though I'd be a cat fursona wise.. can't change my birth year) I do miss the saying from the previous comic about there being "rain in the forecast".. I wonder what term will pop up for this comic

Anyway, you look so cute as a rat!
Congrats on beating it btw.
